It seems everyone wants the darkest eggs possible when it comes to Black Copper Marans. Pinemoon Farms is currently breeding for the darkest eggs possible, with emphasis on color, bloom, and spots. This is a multi year project, starting with hatchery chicks that (hopefully) hatched from an egg at least a #5 on the Marans darkness scale. The likelihood of breeding a #9 on the color scale from hatchery stock is almost zero, but we sure are going to give it a try! We will eventually be adding breeder stock as availability allows.
Earthen Eggers are layers that lay all the beautiful shades of the earth. From the light tan of a sandy shore, to the brown of dark, rich compost that feeds the plants that nourish your family. Earthen Eggers will be a mixes of Buckeyes, Blue Copper Marans, Black Copper Marans, Bresse, Cuckoo Marans, Cochins, Exchequer Leghorns, and Welsummers. We are hoping these birds lay a wide range of browns that mimic the earthen tones around us. They are expected to be all colors and have several comb types. They should lay 3-5 or more eggs per week, depending on the cross. Most are also expected to be heavier birds suitable for the table as well.
I adore the color of the sky. And when I realized I could mimic the sky in my egg layers, I was so excited. These Sky Eggers will lay all the shades of blue possible, just like the sky above. These birds will be a mix of Crested Cream Legbars, BBS Ameracauna, Exchequer Leghorn, and Bresse. Some will be homozygous blue, some will be hetrozygous blue, but all will lay blue; from light, almost white powder blue, to bright blue. Most will have pea combs, but some will have straight or other. Muffs and beards are possible.
The goal with these girls is to breed for the brightest egg possible in a duel purpose bird. Starting from homozygous blue layers crossed over colored layers to produce hens that lay a bright green, blue, and white where possible. Possible breeds include Cream Crested Legbar, Olive Egger, Easter Egger, BBS Ameracauna. Exchequer Leghorn, and Bresse.
Do you marvel at all the wonderful colors the plants have around you? Just the greens are stunning. That is what we are attempting to capture in these layers. From light green and dusty colors, to pine and grass, these eggs will range all the green colors possible. Any combination of breeds we have is possible, including those from our Olive Egger Project and Dark Marans Project.
I'm a little late to the trend, but I adore those deep green and speckled eggs that you've seen on Pinterest. We here at the farm are trying to breed for those beautiful green colors. Several breeds are being used to produce these colors, including BBS Ameracauna, Crested Cream Legbar, Black Copper Marans, Welsummer, and Dark Copper Marans.
Petal Eggers remind me of the soft colors of flowers, hence the name. Petal Eggers can include all soft colors, the faint, tint, peachy, powdery, and heavy bloomed colors. Pink, peach, green, seafoam, pistachio, tan, cream, powder blue, baby blue, and white colors possible. All mixed breeds possible. May be muffed or have a pea comb. Will rarely be feather legged.
I am fascinated by the spots on wild bird eggs. I think they are beautiful, decorating the shell like a natural painting. Here at Pinemoon Farms, we are working on breeding a line of heavy spots in all colors, including sea foam (blue) and tint (white with dark spots). Are these colors possible? According to the science, they are! It's just they are very hard to breed for, and not many people are doing it. This project will be several years long, because we are starting from scratch with hatchery birds.
American Bresse/ French Bresse are a relitivly new breed to the United States. Regarded as the most flavorful chicken breed, Bresse are also duel purpose, laying around 200 eggs per year. We are breeding for fast growing and thick finishing, giving you the option of a large, flavorful bird that also will give you breakfast!
The Ohio Express is a tailor made chicken for the state of Ohio. Using Buckeye as a starter bird, our goal is to increase laying yield and bird size, making them the perfect bird for an Ohio Homestead.
A heavy bloomed egg is at the center of several of our breeding programs. A heavy bloomed egg can come from any breed of chicken. More luck than skill to achieve, the heavy blooming on an egg can only be passed from mother to daughter, and is greatly influenced by the rooster. We carefully select every hen and rooster for this project, and hopefully will have a line of Heavy Bloom Layers several years from now.
Pink Eggers are a heavy bloom tan (brown) layer, and really can't be bought anywhere yet. Just like with the Heavy Bloom Layers, Pink Eggers are more lucked into than bought. They get their own category because Pink Eggers are harder to breed for than just Heavy Bloom Layers, as the color of the egg is super important to get the "pink" color. We will be breeding these alongside our Heavy Bloom Layers.
Mini Rex are almost the perfect size for us and our needs, but show quality Mini Rex are just a tad small. There is a breeder near me, where I got my first rabbits, and I am hoping to take her too big Minis and use them to increase my herd weight.
